US sets COVID-19 death record for third week, hospitalizations fall

  • The United States lost more than 23,000 lives to COVID-19 last week, setting a record for the third week in a row, though the number of new infections and the number of patients in hospitals both fell from the previous seven days.

  • The country reported more than 1.5 million new cases of COVID-19 in the week ended Jan. 17, down 12% from the previous week, and only eight out of 50 states posted a rise in new infections.

  • The average number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals fell 2% from the previous week to about 128,000, the first drop since October.

Mumbai: Co-WIN glitches again slow down inoculation drive

  • On the second day of COVID-19 inoculation drive in the city, the civic body managed to administer vaccines to only 50 per cent of the targeted number of healthcare workers on Tuesday due to glitches in Co-WIN software application.

  • The BMC officials again blamed technical glitches in Co-WIN, the IT platform developed by the Union government to implement and manage the inoculation process, for low turnout of healthcare workers.

Noida: 10 new COVID-19 cases, recovery rate 99.07%

  • Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar recorded 10 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday that pushed the district's infection tally to 25,289, official data showed. The active cases in the district also came down to 144 from 157 the previous day, according to the data released by the Uttar Pradesh Health Department for a 24-hour period.

  • On the brighter side, 23 more patients got discharged during the period with the overall recoveries reaching 25,054, the fifth highest in the state.

  • Gautam Buddh Nagar has a death toll of 91 with a mortality rate of 0.35 per cent. The recovery rate of patients stood at 99.07 per cent, the statistics showed.

  • A vial of COVID-19 vaccine once opened for inoculation needs to be fully used within four hours, else the remaining doses go waste and need to be destroyed, senior doctors said.

  • The first batch of Oxford COVID-19 Covishield vaccine had reached Delhi's central storage facility at Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital (RGSSH) on January 12. The lot of Bharat Biotech-made Covaxin had reached there the next day, which is being used at six sites, including AIIMS and RML Hospital.

  • "Each 5 ml vial of the vaccine has 10 doses in total. And, once opened, all 10 doses have to be consumed within four hours, otherwise it goes waste, and remaining doses have to be destroyed," RGSSH spokesperson Chhavi Gupta told.

Haryana govt reduces cost of RT-PCR test to Rs 499

  • The Haryana government has reduced the rate of the Reverse Transcription- Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) and Rapid Antigen tests for private laboratories from Rs 700 to Rs 499 while the charge for home collection has been capped from Rs 900 to Rs 699, with immediate effect.

  • This is the sixth time the Haryana government has reduced the price for Covid-19 testing through the RT-PCR at private laboratories.

COVID-19 vaccination resumes in Mumbai, Pune after 2 days

  • After a gap of two days, the COVID-19 vaccination drive resumed in Mumbai and Pune on Tuesday morning, but unlike the first day, there was hardly any rush of beneficiaries for taking jabs in the metropolis.
  • A doctor at a vaccination centre in Mumbai said the response was slow in the morning, but the process was gradually picking up.

Immune compromised or are a medicine that affects your immune system. Are pregnant. Are breast feeding. Have received another COVID-19 vaccine. Any other serious health related issues, as determined by the vaccinator/ Officer supervising vaccination," the fact sheet said.

China, WHO acted too slowly on COVID-19, says response panel

  • An independent panel has slammed China and the World Health Organisation (WHO) for "early shortcomings" in the initial response to the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response, established by WHO in May 2020, is co-chaired by former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark and former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, CNN reported.
  • In a report released on January 18, the panel called for an overhaul of global health alert and response systems, saying the current system is "not fit for purpose."
