Former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has been facing a rebellion in his party. Against this backdrop, the meeting of BJP leaders Eknath Khadse and Pankaja Munde on Wednesday assumes significance as both leaders have been sending out signals that they were not happy with many things in the party. Before meeting Pankaja, Khadse also met former Vinod Tawde.
Former union minister and BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde has claimed his party colleague Devendra Fadnavis was made chief minister in Maharashtra last month despite lacking majority only to 'protect' Rs 40,000 crore central funds under the CM's control from being 'misused'.
Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray has announced a review of the Rs 1.1 lakh crore Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. Thackeray asserted that his govt would not work in a vindictive manner, adding, “We will review the bullet train project just like we have not stayed the Metro project.” Thackeray underscored the value of development without environmental damage.
The Uddhav Thackeray-led government is likely to prove its majority in the Maharashtra assembly on Saturday itself, well ahead of the December 3 deadline.
Till 1996, Shiv Sena was assumed by all to be bequeathed to Uddhav Thackeray’s cousin Raj Thackeray. The latter had a penchant for fiery speechmaking, had a greater stylistic resemblance to uncle’s onstage persona and was a cartoonist like him. Uddhav, who graduated from the JJ School of Arts, preferred to stay in the background.
He however added that the state would have only one Deputy Chief Minister and that would be from the NCP. The Congress had been insistent on the issue of the Speaker's post that it was willing to forego the Deputy Chief Minister being offered to it. The Congress and NCP were both claiming the Speaker’s post with the Sena weighing on the NCP side.
Sources said family members like Supriya Sule and Rohit Pawar also asked Ajit to resign. The clincher, according to NCP leaders, was Sharad Pawar’s wife Pratibha and his other aunts, who made a number of calls and told him that ‘he stands the risk of permanently dividing and damaging the family’.
Fadnavis said “I am afraid that they might fall under the weight of their own contradictions. This government will be like a threewheeled rickshaw where each tyre goes in a different direction.”
Addressing the MLAs, Sharad Pawar said: “Tomorrow, the Supreme Court will decide on the date for the vote of confidence. The governor will have no option but to call you. Unlike Manipur or Goa, this is Maharashtra. We won’t allow anything wrong to happen. We say what is right and what is wrong. We have the capacity to teach you a lesson.”
BJP leaders said Sharad Pawar should back his nephew Ajit to avoid a split in the family and the party. BJP believes that the NCP leadership may come around and that’s the reason why Sharad Pawar hasn’t expelled Ajit from the party. However, those close to Sharad Pawar said he has taken Ajit’s revolt personally.
