PUNE: The attention-grabbing mobile gadget, MoPod, which took the UK, Europe and Japan by storm last year, is ready to be launched in India. HitPlay Devices, a Mumbai-based start-up gizmo company, will roll out the gadget next month, under a licence from the UK-based giftmaker, The Monster Factory.

MoPod comprises a glass capsule with a battery-powered light and a character sealed inside. It interacts with mobile phones, causing the character inside to light up and dance on receiving a call or SMS. After its launch in October 2006, the gadget has been a runaway success.

Along with MoPods, HitPlay Devices will also launch a series of innovative gadgets like a running and jumping alarm clock, shower radio, coffee mug with a biscuit compartment, glowing faucets, a cassette-drive for the PC, T-shirts that light up on music beats, etc. Several of these products are the gadget makers own innovation while others are sourced.

HitPlay managing director Chirag Alreja said, Gadgets have become a part of everyones life and we can hardly work without them. We founded HitPlay to innovate these gadgets and the technology to make our lives simpler and more interesting. Currently, we have close to 40 such gadgets and we plan to bring out 400 innovative gadgets by 2010. We are a six-people company and do not manufacture the gadgets. We innovate and design prototypes of the gadgets and get them commercially manufactured from a third party in Taiwan and Indonesia.

The company has the licence for MoPods in a revenue sharing arrangement, with a commitment of a fixed sale as the exclusive retailer.

MoPods works on the GSM frequency and are helpful to know when a call or SMS is coming into ones mobile phone, especially when the mobile phone is silent or out of sight. It works within a radius of 1-1.2 metre from the mobile phone, so it can also be used as a kind of charm-cum-collectible, Mr Alreja said.

He added, MoPods have a good potential in India because almost all women carry their mobile phones in their bags, with a lot of noise around. We have tied up with retail stores like Shoppers Stop, Landmark, Music World, Rhythm House, and some web portals to market the MoPods and our other gadgets.

While MoPods currently feature international cartoon characters, HitPlay has the option to Indianise these characters. We have brought characters like little devil, puppy, gangster, monster, reindeer, angel, bird, seahorse, robot, princess, spaceman and i-penguin under a licence in the MoPods.

However, we can also bring characters of Indian origin in it. We had preliminary talks with an animation film producer in this regard, Mr Alreja said.
