BENGALURU: Mithuna by Paul John, the new single malt by Indian whisky maker John Distilleries, was declared the third finest whisky in the world by connoisseur Jim Murray.

The English whisky writer releases his iconic whisky bible every year, which reveals 50 best variants across categories such as blended scotch, Japanese and European. Murray tastes over 4700 whiskies for his yearly edition, and in his ranking system, any whisky which scores in the 94-97.5 range is voted by him as “superstar whiskies.”

Mithuna scored 97 and was also awarded Asian whisky of the year in his latest publication.

“If Mithuna means “ultimate,” then it is the perfect name. Or maybe Mithuna means “perfect,” then it is pretty close. It is that very rarest of things,” said Murray, according to the press statement. He named Beam Suntory’s Canadian bottling Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye the world’s best whisky of the year.

The new single malt by the Bengaluru-headquartered liquor firm, which has notes of vanilla, coffee mocha, orange peel and honey, will be launched worldwide in November.

“For an Indian whisky to attain such an honour has proven that India is on par and even better in terms of quality with other international whiskies. It marks a turning point in the emergence of India as a serious player in the world of single malt,” said Paul P John, chairman of John Distilleries, that also sells Original Choice whisky.

John Distilleries is an Indian spirits company, in which Sazerac Company, the family-owned distilled spirits company in North America, is an active stakeholder. The range of Paul John single malts, including an entry level variant, the flagship variant, two select casks, and the occasional limited editions, are distilled in Goa.

In 2010, another Indian single malt Amrut Fusion by Amrut Distilleries was voted the third best whisky in the world by Murray.
