NEW DELHI: Cairn India (CIL), a subsidiary of UK-based Cairn Energy, engaged in the development of oilfields in Rajasthan, has written a letter to the government seeking an additional 238 sq km of land adjacent to the area where it recently made three new discoveries, Kaameshwari West 2, 3 and 6.

The company claims that the discovered oil resources of Kaameshwari 2 field extend significantly beyond the existing boundaries of the field.

In a letter to the oil ministry, managing director and chief executive officer Rahul Dhir sought the governments approval to acquire a small area that extends beyond the current contract boundary of the oil field (RJ-ON-90/1) in Barmer, Rajasthan, in line with the terms of the production-sharing contract (PSC).

Quoting a recent decision of the oilfields management committee (which has oil ministry representatives), Mr Dhir said in the letter: ... 238 sq km in open acreage, relinquished from the original RJ-ON-90/1 PSC area, was also agreed to be recommended to the government as per article 10.1 of the PSC.

A Cairn spokesperson declined to comment on the issue.
