India tops Asia-Pacific in power tenders during Q4 2019

India led the activity in Q4 2019 with 1,078 tenders and a share of 58.7%, up 4.2% over the previous quarter and up 12% when compared with the last four-quarter average, followed by the Philippines with 309 tenders and a share of 16.8% and Bangladesh with 184 tenders and a share of 10% during the quarter.

KOLKATA: India saw the highest number of power tenders floated in Asia-Pacific during the quarter ended December 31, data compiled by analysis firm GlobalData suggests.

GlobalData’s analysis is based on all publicly-announced tenders covering power plants, T&D projects, equipment markets, analysis reports, capacity and generation.

Asia-Pacific power industry tenders activity in Q4 of calendar 2019 saw 1,838 tenders announced, marking a flat growth over the last four-quarter average of 1,843, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Looking at tenders by country, India led the activity in Q4 2019 with 1,078 tenders and a share of 58.7%, up 4.2% over the previous quarter and up 12% when compared with the last four-quarter average, followed by the Philippines with 309 tenders and a share of 16.8% and Bangladesh with 184 tenders and a share of 10% during the quarter.

Average of last four-quarter, India held the top spot with 961 tenders, followed by Bangladesh with 303 and the Philippines with 247 tenders.

In terms of tenders segregated by the type of technology, thermal accounted for the largest proportion with 282 tenders and a 53.3% share, followed by solar with 191 tenders and a 36.1% share and hydro with 42 tenders and a 7.9% share.

In terms of segments as tracked by GlobalData, T&D Projects were the most popular segment in Asia-Pacific power tenders activity during Q4 2019, with 991 tenders, followed by T&D Equipment (335) and Generation Equipment (277).

Proportion of tenders by project Implementation saw 919 tenders and a 50% share, supply & erection saw 515 tenders and a 28% share, repair, maintenance, upgrade & others saw 358 tenders and a 19.5% share, consulting & similar services saw 29 tenders and a 1.6% share, power purchase agreement saw ten tenders and a 0.5% share, while electricity supply saw seven tenders and a 0.4% share.

The top issuers of tenders for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Asia-Pacific were Solar Energy Corporation of India at 3,000MW from four tenders, NTPC at 2,614MW from ten tenders and JSC Uzbekenergo for 900MW capacity from one tender.
