The Longest Ones: The Bachelor
Duration: 18 years (2002-)
Scores of women and men have been congregating at the famous Bachelor mansion ever since the dating show launched in 2002, in the hope of finding “the one”. They go on dates to all kinds of exotic locales, with one of the 25 contestants getting eliminated each week, till the finale, when the bachelor of the season proposes.
The show has become a cultural sensation. Famous for turning unknown talent into huge pop stars, the iconic show’s panel of judges has included Simon Cowell, Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez.
The Amazing Race
It follows a group of close to 12 teams of two who go across the world figuring out clues, learning the local cultures and competing in challenges. Each week the last-place team is eliminated, till the final leg.
Throw a bunch of disparate people into a house wired with cameras and microphones and then film them 24/7 as they compete in challenges and get evicted, one by one. That was the Big Brother formula, and when the show aired, the mix of social experiment and reality game show made it a sensation, spawning spinoffs across the world, including in India.
It was supposed to be a “real” depiction of how the police work and for the longest time, viewers lapped up the over 1,000 30-minute episodes featuring real-life cops. But in the wake of the surge of protests against police brutality after the assault and death of George Floyd and long-time efforts by civil rights groups, the show was dropped.
Beyoncé: You might remember that “Queen Bey” started out as part of the three-member Destiny’s Child. But the group debuted on Star Search — a competitive talent show which ran from 1983 to 2005 — as Girl's Tyme. Ironically, they lost.
Emma Stone: Though Emma Stone made an appearance in Malcolm in the Middle, her first credited appearance was on VH1’s In Search of the Partridge Family, a reality show competition searching for people to star in an iteration of The Partridge Family in 2004.
Cardi B: After she went viral in videos for Vine and Instagram, Cardi B appeared in the sixth and seventh seasons of Love & Hip Hop: New York. She finally left the series to launch her music career.
Britney Spears: Like Beyoncé, Spears, too, tried her luck in Star Search in 1992. Like Beyonce, she didn’t win. But it gave her enough exposure to land a spot on The New Mickey Mouse Club alongside Keri Russell and Justin Timberlake. Seven years later, Spears released her first album.
Jon Hamm: He is famous as ad man Don Draper in Mad Men. But in 1996, as a 25-year-old, Jon Hamm appeared on The Big Date, a reality dating show that ran from 1996 to 1997.
