In the middle of Bob Dylan's 1998 Grammy performance, Michael Portnoy, a background dancer and performing artist, ripped off his shirt to reveal "Soy Bomb" written across his chest and then began dancing - for a long time. Portnoy later said no one filming the event realised it was not part of the act.

It was supposed to be a historic moment when Hattie McDaniel became the first African American to win an Oscar in 1939 for the Best Supporting Actress in Gone with the Wind. But because of the racial segregation those days, the hotel where the awards ceremony was held had a whites-only policy. McDaniel was allowed inside after others intervened but she had to sit at a segregated table at the back of the room.
