MUMBAI: Publicis Groupe’s Saurabh Varma has quit his role as chief executive of Publicis Communications. The Paris-headquartered advertising holding company has appointed Anupriya Acharya, who was CEO of Publicis Media, to chief executive for South Asia, Publicis Groupe, in a statement quoting Loris Nold, CEO, Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa, Publicis Groupe.

Acharya has become the first woman in India to head a holding company's group structure.

While Nold elaborated on Acharya’s appointment, the company, however, did not divulge too many details surrounding Varma’s exit. Part of Nold’s statement read, “I am really impressed with her achievements to date and I cannot think of a better leader to take on this extremely important responsibility.

India is an absolutely critical market for us, one of the very best talent pools, with strong innovation and a great resonance well into the region and beyond. It is a strategic priority for us, and shifting to a Groupe leadership is a catalyst to accelerate our investments in India,” said Nold.

In other developments at the firm, industry sources who spoke to Brand Equity said, on the condition of anonymity, the group has been concerned about certain operations in India, mainly the in-house production company called Prodigious. Brand Equity recently learnt that auditors from Paris were sent to Mumbai to look into Prodigious’ business practices and accounts over reports of malpractices. In an email response to our queries, a Publicis Groupe India spokesperson declined to comment on this. It is still unclear if Varma’s departure is in any way related to these events.
