NET exam in Assam, Meghalaya postponed in wake of unrest

The UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) for candidates scheduled to appear in Assam and Meghalaya was postponed on Saturday due to unrest in the region.

Employees of the Assam government today announced that they will go for cease work on December 18 in protest against the amended Citizenship Act. Sadou Asam Karmachari Parishad (SAKP) President Basab Kalita was quoted as saying by PTI that all employees of the state government across Assam will not attend offices on December 18.

Citizenship (Amendment) bill, which got presidential nod, seeks to provide citizenship to six minority groups from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan who have historically undergone religious persecution. The bill has been a major bone of contention in the region (N-E), as the residents fear a demographic change.
