One of your biggest smartphone worry may end soon. The government is set to launch a technology solution to enable tracking of lost and stolen mobile phones.
Service to launch in August
The Department of Telecom (DoT) has assigned the mobile phone tracking project, Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR), to C-DoT in July 2017. It is aimed at bringing down counterfeit cellphones and discouraging theft.
How it works
The CEIR system will block all services on stolen or lost mobile phones on any network. This can be done even if the SIM card has been removed or IMEI number of the handset changed.
