Apple’s iOS 13 software, announced at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, has finally been rolled out for compatible iPhone models.

This is the first time that the iPad will miss out on the latest version of iOS, having debuted iPadOS – a new operating system for Apple’s tablet range.

iOS 13 is available to users of the iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, and newer models.

Here are some of the new tricks you can get your iPhone to perform after updating to iOS 13.

Dark Mode
The colour scheme, perfect for low-light environments and easy on the eyes, can be turned on manually from the Control Centre. The change in background colour is particularly useful in dark rooms or theatres, and users can schedule the hours in which dark mode becomes effective. Wallpapers optimised for dark mode change automatically when you switch modes, and Apple has integrated the new feature across iOS.

Photos

The all-new Photos tab on iOS 13 boasts of enhanced search capability and better video editing support. The Photos app now uses artificial intelligence to find the best part of your photo in previews, giving users the option of seeing the uncropped version as well. It also removes duplicate photos, documents, receipts, and screenshots that have been repeated, helping to declutter the device’s memory.

Taking a cue from the Calendar app, Photos highlights pictures of friends on their birthdays if those dates have been saved to the calendar. Video editing becomes easier with support extended to all formats captured on iPhone, including clips in 4K at 60 fps and slow-motion in 1080p at 240 fps. Edited videos are non-destructive, making it easier to remove effects like a filter or undo a trim.

Camera
The Portrait mode gets an upgrade, enabling users to virtually adjust the position and intensity of studio lighting, and lets users move the light closer to their subject, smoothen skin, brighten facial features, or sharpen the eyes. If the lighting is already excessive, the camera lets you reverse the effect of the Portrait lighting, by moving the source of light away from the subject for a subtle, natural look. The High-Key Light Mono, a new effect in Apple’s Portrait mode, lets users click photos of a subject in monochrome on a white background.

Privacy
Keeping privacy in mind, users will now receive notifications when an app is using their location in the background.Changes to the API prevent apps from accessing location when using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Instead of signing in through Facebook or Google, iPhone users can now access third-party apps using their Apple IDs.

Maps
Maps incorporates schedules of public transit systems that are tracked in real time. Flight status, including the gate location, departure timings, and information about terminals is also available, making it easier if you’re encountering traffic on your way to the airport. The CarPlay experience has been enhanced to provide easier route planning and navigation.

Siri
Apple’s voice assistant will now offer personalized suggestions in Safari, Maps, Podcasts and Music. It can play music, podcasts, audiobooks and radio with third-party apps. Siri has a new voice, and speaks Indian English, a move that will endear it to subcontinental Apple users.

AirPods

System Experience
With the latest rollout, volume controls now appear in the upper-left cornermaking it less intrusive. Content preview has been enabled for emails and web links, whereby users can see a condensed summary by pressing and holding links in the notification tab.

A newly developed QR code scanner, which can be accessed from the Control Centre, offers faster processing time, enhanced privacy, and a flashlight option. iOS 13 also supports full-page markup, where it will now be possible to capture a screenshot of an entire web page, email, or map, and not just that which appears in the phone’s display.

India-centric features

With the release of the iOS 13, Siri will be able to reply and service queries by Indian users in male and female voices that speak English in a distinctively Indian accent.

The latest version presents enhanced options if it detects that users are multilingual. Keyboards in multiple languages can be set up, and users will be able to dictate in their preferred languages. iOS 13 has added 15 new Indian language keyboards, taking the tally of Indic scripts supported on its platform to 22. Some of the new scripts supported include Kashmiri, Dogri, Konkani, Sanskrit, and Sindhi.

Despite the entry of 4G and high-speed mobile connectivity, users streaming videos on their daily commute frequently face disruptions, with interminable delays for buffering content due to patchy network coverage. To work around this drawback, iOS 13 allows video streaming apps like Netflix and Hotstar to optimize the time of day when it downloads content.

Health

The Health app has been optimised to show all health metrics tracked by the device - and other wearables – in one place.

The new Oral Health data type can be used to track toothbrush-ing time. Activity trends including calories burned, distance covered, flights climbed, and cardio fitness levels are processed daily, and the app will send notifications if it feels you are slowing down.
