To celebrate his 56th birthday, Argentine football great, Diego Maradona, opened a restaurant in Abu Dhabi named Cafe Diego. The cafe features typical Argentinean architecture, reminiscent of the streets in Maradona’s hometown of Buenos Aires and serves a variety of traditional Argentine dishes, including some of the footballer’s favourites.

While the football star is opening restaurants, his battle with his waistline continues. In 1994, when he a drug test during the World Cup, Maradona had claimed that he was taking drugs to aid his weight loss.

Maradona suffered increasingly from obesity and at one point weighed 127 kg. He underwent gastric bypass surgery in a clinic in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia in March 2005. His surgeon said that Maradona would follow a liquid diet for three months in order to return to his normal weight.

Maradona had another gastric bypass in November 2015 in Maracaibo, Venezuela where he aimed to lose 30 to 35 kg.

In August this year, he tried principles from biomolecular, metabolic and regenerative medicine, as well as using blood and telemetric data in his latest bid to lose weight with treatment from a German doctor.
