A Decade Of Dejections: Copa America Misadventure & Other Major Setbacks Suffered By Argentina
Too Many Setbacks
By Aashray Hariharan
Argentina’s Copa America misadventure was only the latest heartbreak for five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi. Here are the previous setbacks.
2010 World Cup
Argentina swept aside all opposition on their way to the quarterfi nals, winning four out of four matches. But against Germany, Messi and Co. went down 4-0 as Germany booked a place in the last four.
2011 Copa America
Much was expected of hosts Argentina. But a quarter-final clash against Uruguay went to penalties, and as Carlos Tevez missed his spot kick, the hosts stayed home.
2014 World Cup
Argentina met Germany in the World Cup yet again, but this time in the fi nal. Ninety minutes couldn’t separate the sides, and with just seven minutes of extratime left, Mario Goetze won the cup for Germany.
2015 Copa America
Messi went to the Copa America on the back of a spectacular treble with Barcelona, and inspired his team to the fi nal where they met hosts Chile. But Messi was the only Argentina player to score in the shootout, as Chile won 4-1.
2016 Copa America
Twelve months later, a special Copa America was held to mark the tournament’s centenary. Again Argentina and Chile met in the fi nal and again it went to penalties. This time, Messi too missed his kick, as Chile won 4-2.
2019 Copa America
This time, Messi and Co. came up against arch-rivals Brazil in the semi-fi nal. And what was expected to be a tight match ended up being a facile one-sided contest, that Brazil claimed 2-0.
