Ask Dr D: Astronauts Koch and Meir want to know how to respond to a disgruntled Trump

The effects and dangers of space and weightlessness on a person are the same regardless of gender.

Astronauts Koch and Meir pointed out to Trump that they weren't the 'first-ever female space walkers', rather 15 others had done it before.
Dear Dr D,

It all began with Armstrong bringing man and mankind into the equation. What was wrong with humankind?

The effects and dangers of space and weightlessness on a person are the same regardless of gender. All of us on the International Space Station (it’s travelling 300 km above you and circling the earth at 28,000 kmph) are subject to excessive radiation, muscular atrophy and so on. There’s no specific skill that separates the genders in such an environment. So for the two of us to step out of the ISS for Extra Vehicular Activity was a normal event.

But the president of the US (we understand he figures regularly in this space) spoke to us and said, mistakenly as is his wont, that we were the “first ever female space walkers.” We weren’t: 15 others have done it before showing how normal and common it is and how ignorant he is. When we pointed it out to him, he flipped us off insolently, pretending to adjust his hair. What’s the appropriate response to this, you think?

Koch and Meir,

Dear both,

The ISS has no nationality and is a magnificent human achievement. It is a global place in whose creation we can celebrate the work of all people.

And we can jointly hate the most cretinous public figure of our time. Not just within his country and foreign places but now even from outer space.

Thank you for unifying the world.
