Good weather is not ordinary in Delhi-NCR, and certainly needs to be celebrated.
That hardly any — if any at all — TV news channel took note of the biggest news out of the National Capital Region on Sunday is testimony to how we, as news providers and consumers, are biased towards, well, woe and moan. After weeks of competitive and obsessive checking of recorded readings of suspended particulate matter, and posting of photos of smog-slathered balcony views, people simply looked out of their windows to find a glorious clear sky. That should have been breaking news. In a condition that can only be deemed bordering on the masochistic, the worse things are, the more excited people seem to feel — the excitement, of course, being articulated through feelings ranging from concern to despondency. This excitement was once also a feature of happy things. One fears that too many days of fabulous autumnal weather will stop providing happy articulate matter for people to talk about, and once again, it will become what in today’s terrible jargon goes by ‘new normal’.

But good weather, never mind glorious days, is not ordinary in Delhi-NCR, and certainly needs to be celebrated, if need be ‘exaggerated’. Which is why the print medium, in its more sagacious, aesthetic ways, will still bear witness through news stories and, more importantly, photographs of what was this weekend’s biggest news in Delhi: It was a beautiful day.
