Even decades later, the charm and appeal of Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe stays on. And a chance to own a piece of her story, is a precious one for fans and admirers. At The Exceptional Sale, being hosted by Christie’s on October 29 in New York, bidders have a shot at getting their hands on the 1959 Hasselblad 500C camera (no. 36980) used by celebrated Hollywood photographer Douglas Kirkland for his legendary 1961 Look Magazine photoshoot of Monroe.

The camera is being offered together with two magazine backs, two Carl Zeiss lenses, and two 40x60 iCamera used to click Marilyn Monroe's sensual pics in white sheet to go on salen. limited-edition archival prints of Monroe taken during the shoot. “The two photographs, Marilyn (Overhead) and Marilyn (Hugging Pillow), were taken at the pinnacle of Monroe’s fame and less than one year before her tragic death; they remain among the last professional images taken of the star,” says the release.

A piece on the website of the auction, titled, ‘In bed with Marilyn,’ recalls some of the behind-the-scenes moments. As per the piece, a few days before the shoot in November 1961, Kirkland and two of his magazine colleagues met with Monroe and her agent in the star’s Beverly Hills apartment. Kirkland’s greatest difficulty as a “very young photographer,” (he was just 27 at the time) was explaining to Monroe exactly how he wanted to photograph her.

But apparently, Monroe took charge, “assuring him that all they needed to make magic together was a bed, a white silk sheet, some Frank Sinatra records and plenty of Dom Pérignon champagne.” And on the day of the shoot, she arrived fashionably late (two hours) after the appointed time.

The first set-up at the shoot saw Monroe in a dress. “Returning to the dressing room, she took off her clothes before slipping unannounced into the unmade bed, wrapping herself seductively in the white silk sheet,” the piece said, adding, ““This was, of course, very exciting for me in my young man way,’ says Kirkland. ‘I mean, here I was with Marilyn Monroe in front of me. She was within arm’s reach, twisting and turning under that sheet, which was semi-transparent.’”

“The evening Marilyn Monroe and Douglas Kirkland spent together was intimate, sexually charged and ‘extraordinary’, as he recalls,” says the piece not surprisingly.

An Anticipated Affair

15 Apr, 2019
A glimpse of the dimensions of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi’s wealth recently came to light with the auction of some of his artworks. The much-anticipated affair in Mumbai not only showcased his credentials as an art collector but also displayed his fondness for doing things in a big way. Suffice to say that those who successfully placed their bids that night, walked away with some largish works. When hanging on the wall, many of these works would be hard to miss, rather they’d dominate. Here are some works that were auctioned.
