Jeff Bezos, Lauren Sanchez spotted in NY; other high-profile, post-scandal first outings
The Amazon CEO and Sanchez were spotted together for the first time since news of their romance broke.
A look at five other high-profile first sightings post a scandal.
1. Fan Bingbing
China’s highest paid actress went under the radar after being mired in a $70 million tax evasion scandal. Her last big public appearance was the Cannes Film Festival in 2018. In April, the 37-year-old actress made her first public appearance in almost a year when she walked the red carpet at the IQIYI Ninth Anniversary Gala in Beijing.
2. Grace Mugabe
In August 2017, Zimbabwe’s former First Lady was accused of attacking a South African model at a hotel in Johannesburg. The model, Gabriella Engels, said that Mugabe beat “the hell out of me” with an electric extension cord. The South African government was criticised for letting Mugabe leave the country after the alleged assault. Soon after, Mugabe was seen touring exhibition stands at an agricultural show in Harare. After she lost her diplomatic immunity, South African prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for her in December 2018.
3. Prince Harry
In August 2012, pictures showing Prince Harry naked in a Las Vegas hotel room were published online. Prior to that, the young royal was spotted at a star-studded pool party held at MGM’s Grand Wet Republic. However, a few weeks later, Harry made his first public appearance at an awards ceremony in London organised by the WellChild charity to celebrate the lives of seriously ill children and the doctors who care for them. The prince, dressed in a smart grey suit, made no reference to the pictures, but described himself as “never one to be shy in coming forward”.
4. Park Geun-hye
In October 2016, the then-president of South Korea, Park Geun-hye, was caught amidst a political scandal. There were allegations of cult activities, influence-peddling and leak of classified information. In December 2016, Geun-hye made her first public appearance after a protester set a memorial on fire at the birthplace of her father, Park Chunghee, the country’s former military rule. Park cried after returning to her car, her office said at the time. Geun-hye was impeached soon after and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
5. David Petraeus
In November 2012, David Petraeus resigned from his position as the Director of CIA after his extra-marital affair became public. In March 2013, Petraeus made his first public appearance to speak at the University of Southern California (USC). During his talk, Petraeus apologised for his affair and said that “life doesn’t stop with such a mistake. It can and must go on”, for which he received a standing ovation.
