Amit Sachdeva, General Manager, JW Marriott Jaipur Resort & Spa, loves riding but is cautious of certain national highways.

An avid motorcycle enthusiast, Sachdeva has ridden a Suzuki Shogun 110CC 14 Bhp, an Enfield Machismo bullet, a Harley Davidson Street Bob and Ducati Hyperstrada 821 but it was the Harley Davidson that stands out most vividly in his memory.

“The best ride I’ve ever taken was on my Harley Davidson Street-Bob back in the day from Pune to Hyderabad,” Sachdeva told ET Panache. “While the distance didn’t seem daunting at about 600kms, what we hadn’t expected was the poor road quality.”

Tested Like Never Before

“From Pune to Solapur it took us 3 hours for 300 kms, for the next 280-300kms, we took nearly 7.5 hours,” he said recalling that nightmarish experience. “The roads were so bad we could barely find stretches of straight road and it was difficult to find flat rods from potholes. In fact, it was such a bumpy ride, the head light from the bike fell off,” he recalled.

“Thanks to the expert riders in the group, we slowly made our way safely to Hyderabad. The next day, I was riding back alone and had to negotiate the nightmarish potholes again and I made the Hyderabad to Pune journey back in a total of 11 hours! It was a very special trip as I was never tested like that before and I came back a better rider!”

So what has Sachdeva learnt from the experience and his years on the road?

“Keep riding them (bikes) regularly. Always lube the chain even when you’re not riding regularly and never skip a service due date. Also, try and always buy genuine accessories as they don’t damage the bike and are safer.”

First Bike
The Suzuki Shogun 110CC 14 Bhp. My father had bought it for me. It was an extremely light and agile machine with the best power output from a bike back then.

In My Garage
A Mitsubishi Outlander 4X4 petrol and a Ducati Hyperstrada 821. I love my Ducati but I may upgrade to the Multistrada V4 once it is launched, if I like the ride.

A quality I wish my bike had…
A fully adjustable front suspension from Ohlins. Next up, I’ll ensure it has one whenever I pick up a new one.

If I had to name my bike…
Hooligan.

One person I’d love to talk cars with

Craig Smith, President and Managing Director of Asia Pacific for Marriott International, loves motorcycles. I don’t know anyone else who’s as passionate about motorcycling as him. And he’s a Ducati rider as well.

One person whose bike collection you’re envious of
MS Dhoni. He’s got every road and track machine you can think of.
