Shashi Tharoor (L) and Sanjay Nirupam (R).
Counting is under way for the 542 constituencies, and hopefuls are hoping for the best. And some of them have also sought divine intervention, hoping that faith in the higher powers can pull them through.

Shashi Tharoor, who is hoping to retain the Trivandrum seat, was seen praying with his mother at home. He posted a tweet, hoping that there will be "deliverance for the nation from 5 years of misgovernance, ineptitude and bigotry."

Mumbai Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam knocked on the doors of the Siddhivinayak temple to seek blessings of Lord Ganesha.

Meanwhile, Tharoor's opponent, the BJP's Kummanam Rajasekharan, offered prayers at the Ayyaguru Ashram in Thycaud.

Senior BJP Karnataka leader Shobha Karandlaje also sought blessings from the cave shrine of Amarantha, as she wished the party a victorious run.

Meanwhile BJP's Babul Supriyo took a jibe at the opposition ahead of the results, saying, "One piece of Humour for the Day: Opposition & Rahul Gandhi are alleging (& crying) that?? "Not only EVMs, even TV remotes have been hacked - whichever button we press, it shows a NDA victory!!”AB Batao."

While politicians placed their faith in the divine, public figures like the Sadhguru, and bestselling author Chetan Bhagat, also reposed their faith in democracy and the people's will.

Meanwhile in some parts of the country, celebrations have begun, buoyed by Sunday's exit polls that predicted a sweep for the ruling National Democratic Alliance.
