Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) recently asked users to delete the mAadhaar app from their smartphones and download the new version, which was said to be more secure and rich in features.

The app now has a new user interface which divides it into two parts: My Aadhaar and Services.

The first section, secured with a four-digit PIN, allows Aadhaar holders to lock or unlock biometric authentication, share eKYC offline, generate OTP and more.

The Services section lets one download the Aadhaar, update address, scan or show QR code, order Aadhaar reprint and verify email or phone number. It also allows users to locate nearest Aadhaar enrolment centres and track the service status of their application.

Having Aadhaar card is not mandatory to use the mAadhaar app. However, users need to register Aadhaar profile in the app to avail personalised Aadhaar services.

Users can save details of up to three Aadhaar profiles in the app but these need to be registered under the same mobile phone number.

We tested most of the features the app offers, including reprint, downloads, change of address and scanning of QR codes. All worked smoothly. However, sometimes the app failed to connect to the internet despite functional connectivity.

Also, UIDAI should have added a fingerprint scanner or any other biometric process to authenticate Aadhaar-related verification to make the app more secure.

The app is available for download on Google Play Store and Apple App Store and runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop or above. For iPhones and iPads, it is iOS 10 or above.

The app now supports 13 languages including Bengali, Odia, Urdu, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, Punjabi, Marathi and Assamese.
