If you are a farmer, it can be tough navigating the vagaries of weather. And often, just knowing the weather forecast is not enough. You will need more information to better manage the farm and the crops.

The Meghdoot app looks to fill this gap, giving out weather forecast-based agro advisories to farmers in different regions in their own languages.

These advisories include wind speed, its direction, humidity and rainfall every three hours. Other than weather information, the app also provides crop and livestock advisories for selected locations every Tuesday and Friday.

Developed by the India Meteorological Department, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology and Indian Council of Agricultural Research and aptly named Meghdoot (cloud messenger), it is available on Android and iOS and is simple to use once you sign in with your name, mobile number, state and district.

The app’s advisories come in 10 languages, including Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Odia and Hindi.

During the review, we tracked the crop advisory in Jhajjar district in Haryana where the kharif season has set in. The app showed advisories for all major crops grown in the region such as barley, mustard, rice and berseem. The advisory included a brief weather summary and guidance as to when and which crop varieties can be used. The app also advises farmers on how to keep the livestock healthy, detailing the preferable amount of fodder that can be given.

The app also allows the user to add or delete location on the dashboard. There is also a Quick View section that enables you to see weather and crop advisory without adding it to the dashboard. Another feature is ‘Past weather’ using which one can track weather patterns in the selected region of the past seven days.

When launched in August this year, the app covered 150 districts. It now has 668 districts.
