PVR Pictures brings director Asif Kapadia’s newest project, 'Diego Maradona', to cinema lovers in India on October 11.

In the world of entertainment, if there’s a name that has indisputably been a turning point and has revolutionised the way we associate the movie-viewing experience with, it is unarguably that of PVR Cinemas.

PVR Pictures, the motion picture and syndication arm of PVR Limited has a new offering — a documentary called 'Diego Maradona', which charts the journey of the controversial footballer. Both Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, JMD, PVR Ltd, and director Asif Kapadia are very enthusiastic about its release in India on October 11.

“I am not a football buff, but I love [Asif] Kapadia’s films, such as 'Amy and Senna',” says Bijli, adding that it’s the business of film-making that excites him more, for obvious reasons. “Short films and documentaries come at a smaller cost and it all works very well for us. Also, as a cinema company, I would stagnate if I didn’t get a wide variety of films, even if I have to take risks sometimes. So, we try and push good content as much as we can.”

As the domestic multiplex operator with 800 screens and nearly 22 per cent market share nationwide, PVR Cinemas is the largest in India, and Bijli expects to have 1,000 screens by FY21-22, adding 80-90 screens every year.

'Diego Maradona' takes a look at the career of the football icon and documents his life using actual footage. It is one film that just might prove to be a game changer yet again for Indian viewers for whom cinema continues to be the primary source of entertainment.

Asif Kapadia, the film’s director, explains why he chose Maradona as the subject of his next film after winning the BAFTA Awards at the Sundance Film Festival 2011 for the film Senna. “I am interested in controversial characters and not in people who have won some championships. I want drama, conflict, tension and as much grey as possible. Maradona is the third part of a trilogy about child geniuses and fame. He is someone I knew as a child. He was the best player in the world, and that was the germination of an idea of making a film on him some three decades ago,” says Kapadia.

'Diego Maradona' releases on October 11 across India in 75 theatres of PVR Cinemas.
