Martin Schwenk said he likes open spaces because he has a claustrophobic tendency.
High ceilings, open spaces, books, tech — and above all, family. That’s what Martin Schwenk, MD, Mercedes-Benz India, would like in his den.

My den
“I don’t have a man cave as such. But I like to have a lot of books wherever I am. I always need a book around, which nowadays means an electronic book. I read books of all genres; that’s also my source of entertainment.

“My den is simple. I am very busy lately and don’t find myself with a lot of energy at the end of a working day. I like reading newspapers as well, and like to have them in my space.

“Technology and tech products are my comforters. I am a techie and am interested in computers and gizmos like voice-controlled assistants. In fact, I was one of the early adopters of these products, from back when you could only have it through a subscription. However, I don’t end up using this much any more.

“I like reading about technology and artificial intelligence; both the business and the consumer aspects of it.”

People I’d invite to my room
“I have lived in many countries, but my friends are from back home. I’d like to have my family here in my space. My kids are all grown up now; my eldest daughter is 23 years old. But they are still the people I’d love to share my space with.”

Things I’d never have
“I would not want anything related to cleaning. I do not like cleaning up much. My den would be messy, but not dirty. I don’t think I would put up any form of signage on it. I feel I should not stress myself upon a space. So, I also don’t like posters.

“But I would go for art in my space. Mostly modern art. If I could afford it, I would like an Andy Warhol. I am also a fan of some other artists, unknown outside Germany, who do very nice work. I would like to go for that. I’d like family pictures. When you go through your old phones, you end up finding some gems. The pictures I have of my family have a lot of history attached to them.”

Chairs make the man
“I love my chairs, as they make me comfortable. My chairs are a mix of recliners and lounge chairs, all of which are very easy and comfortable to sit in.

“I like open spaces because I have a claustrophobic tendency. High ceilings, open spaces, and a lot of light — these are all very important to me. If I were to describe it, the adjectives I’d use are: Open, light, bright and friendly.”
