Roborace features all-electric self-driving race cars, where programmers are the stars
World’s first driverless racing car runs on GPS system accurate enough for missile guidance.
The upcoming motorsport of autonomous racing is currently being led by Roborace, a series that features all-electric self-driving race cars. While fans of other racing series flatter world-class drivers, in Roborace, it’s the programmers who are the real stars.
The company’s famous Robocar, a fully autonomous vehicle, is designed by Daniel Simon, known for his work on Hollywood films such as Tron: Legacy, Oblivion and Captain America. The Robocar is powered by Nvidia’s Drive PX2 AI car computing platform and uses a number of technologies to drive itself, including LIDARs, radars, AI cameras, ultrasonic sensors, optical speed sensors, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning and more. The car has GPS inertial system that’s accurate enough for missile guidance.

This year, its Season Alpha for Roborace — an experimental year where it will explore different formats and different types of competition. The idea is to drive the advancement in the software. Each racing team will have programmers responsible for customising the algorithms within the self-driving software that controls the autonomous vehicles.
Season Alpha will also see Roborace’s second vehicle and development platform DevBot 2.0 hit the track. Unlike the Robocar, DevBot has a cabin and can be driven by a human or a computer — making human versus machine race a possibility.
