Sushant Singh Rajput death: CBI probe to cover professional rivalry, nepotism

    Synopsis

CBI wants to investigate every possible angle before concluding.

    ANI
Rhea Chakraborty had arrived at the Narcotics Control Bureau office on Sunday. She was grilled for seven hours and has again been summoned on Monday.
MUMBAI: Sleuths investigating the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s are set to widen the ambit of the probe by looking into the allegations of professional rivalry and accusation that certain sections of the film industry did not give him work since he did not have a Bollywood lineage, said people privy to the information.

They said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) wants to investigate every possible angle before concluding whether the death was a case of suicide or homicide and whether the actor was driven to suicide by any personal, professional or mental reasons.

Meanwhile, the Narcotics Control Bureau summoned Rajput’s former live-in partner Rhea Chakraborty on Sunday and grilled her for seven hours as part of its probe into the drugs connection to the case. Chakraborty has been summoned again on Monday.

“Before arriving at any conclusion on what led to the actor's death, it will be essential to probe the professional rivalry and ‘Bollywood nepotism’ angle. This will be looked into in due course by the team and whoever is required to be questioned in connection with it will be called in by the agency,” said a senior official, who did not wish to be identified.

“However, so far no summons or communications have been made with the directors or production houses that Rajput was working with. This will be the second leg of the investigation,” said the official.

In response to ET’s queries, a CBI spokesperson declined to comment saying, “Investigation in the case is in progress.” Rajput, 34, was found dead at his Bandra apartment on June 14.

SSR death probe: NCB arrests Rhea's brother Showik Chakraborty and Samuel Miranda in drug link probe

MUMBAI: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Friday placed Showik Chakraborty and Samuel Miranda under arrest in an alleged drug consumption case linked to the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput. While Showik is Rajput’s girlfriend, Rhea’s brother, Miranda was Rajput’s manager. Last week the NCB had booked Rhea, Showik, Miranda and others under certain sections of the NDPS Act based on information received from the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

    Probing death of Disha Salian
The imminent widening of the probe comes weeks after the Mumbai Police concluded that Rajput had committed suicide. It had registered an ‘accidental death record’ in the matter and had investigated the Bollywood professional rivalry angle, summoning leading production houses and even asking their chiefs such as Aditya Chopra, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Mahesh Bhatt to join the probe.

Not happy with the outcome of the Mumbai Police probe, Rajput's father, KK Singh, registered a case with the Bihar Police against Rhea Chakraborty, her family members and others of abetment to suicide and criminal conspiracy. The case was, however, transferred to the CBI by the Supreme Court.

The central agency is now seeking to ascertain whether the actor’s death was a case of suicide or homicide. A forensic team from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) joined the probe over the weekend and also visited the actor’s Bandra residence to reconstruct the sequence of events.

The CBI is also probing the death of public relations professional Disha Salian, who allegedly committed suicide in suburban Mumbai on June 8, days before Rajput's death. “Salian's former employer, Cornerstone CEO Bunty Sajdeh, was summoned by the agency earlier this week. Salian was working with Sajdeh's talent management company Cornerstone, which was handling Rajput's account,” said the official cited earlier.

“While Salian had last met Rajput around a year ago, the actor's Google engine searches indicated that he had searched her name in the days leading to his death. Certain allegations were made mainly on social media, connecting the two deaths. While the CBI hasn’t taken over Salian's death probe, her death is being investigated to ascertain the allegations,” said the official.

Another official said the evidence collected so far — including statements of family members as well as the accused, forensic evidence and financial audit findings — appeared to point to a case of suicide but the CBI hasn’t concluded the investigation and it will wait for the AIIMS forensic team and other digital and forensic evidence to arrive at a conclusion. “The CBI is in no hurry to conclude the case. It will probe every angle, negate conspiracy theories before submitting its final findings,” said the official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity.

Going by the complaint registered by Rajput’s father, there are two broad allegations, said the official – Chakraborty and her family members drove Rajput to commit suicide by drawing him into drugs and medication, and Chakraborty and her family siphoned off Rs 15 crore from his accounts. “As far as the second part is concerned, the forensic audit report received from the Mumbai Police and the investigation updates shared by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which is probing allegations of money laundering, have indicated that there was no major transaction or transfer between Rajput and Chakraborty,” said the official.

The audit report states that there was a turnover of about Rs 70 crore in the bank accounts held by Rajput in the past five years, and the amount was spent over the years by the actor on trips, gifts, purchase of a real estate in suburban Mumbai, high-end cars and a bike, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Audit firm Grant Thornton India was asked by the Mumbai Police to look into the actor’s financial dealings of the past five years.

A substantial amount has also been transferred to production houses, PR agencies associated with the late actor and about Rs 5 crore was paid as taxes. The actor was also heavily into charity and spending benevolently on his staff. As far as Chakraborty and her family members are concerned, the audit found transactions of a little over Rs 50 lakh, expenses incurred by way of purchase of airline tickets, shopping and spa services payments incurred by Chakraborty that were footed by Rajput.

“The probe by the two agencies doesn’t indicate any major financial transactions between Chakraborty and Rajput. However, in a statement given by a bank relationship manager to Bihar police which has been shared with the CBI, the former has shared a WhatsApp communication between him and the actor during May 20-21, this year, wherein the actor wanted to make changes to his accounts access,” said the official. “The manager had replied saying that he would ‘require his signature and had requested the actor to share his email ID where he could send the communique’. Why was the actor wanting to make changes and what kind of changes he intended to make and if this was connected to the accused will be probed.”

Probing the drugs and abetment angle, the CBI has already recorded the statements of the psychiatrists who had treated Rajput. “Information will also be sought from the NCB, which is probing the drug connection to the case to share its findings so as to ascertain if this was a case of clinical mental health issue or the actor was driven into drugs and that deteriorated his health/mental condition. This will help the CBI firmly conclude the first part of the allegations levelled by Rajput’s family members,” said the official.
