Among the several controversies that surround the longest-running animated series, ‘The Simpsons’, probably the most prominent one is around the character of Apu. Critics argue that the character enforces religious stereotypes. However, in a shocking announcement, actor Hank Azaria has announced that he will no longer voice the character.

According to a BBC report which quoted the website SlashFilm, Azaria said, “All we know there is I won't be doing the voice anymore, unless there's some way to transition it or something.”

Elaborating further on the issue, Azaria said, “We all made the decision together... We all agreed on it. We all feel like it's the right thing and good about it.”

For the uninitiated, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon is a character of an immigrant shopkeeper on ‘The Simpsons’. The controversy over the character was reignited in 2017 when Indian-American comic Hari Kondabolu made a documentary saying he was founded on racial stereotypes.

Kondabolu took to Twitter and sent out a tweet, writing, “I do hope they keep the character & let a very talented writing staff do something interesting with him.”

In another tweet, Kondabolu clarified that his aim was not to get rid of the character but to ‘discuss race, representation and his [my] community’.

In his tweet, the Indian-American comic reiterated that he loves ‘The Simpsons’.

It will be interesting to see how the writers will deal with Hazaria’s departure and if they will come up with something fresh for him.
