Striking and eloquent, Charlotte Flair has a magnetic personality. So it comes as a surprise to hear that her dating life used to leave a lot to be desired.

“How was it like meeting people? Impossible!” the American professional WWE wrestler (whose real name is Ashley Fliehr) laughs and tells ET Panache during a recent visit to Mumbai.

Before love struck
Flair, daughter of legendary wrestler Ric Flair, just got engaged to wrestler Andrade Almas (“I am very much still in that honeymoon phase and I don’t know if it will ever go away.”).

But earlier, her love life, or lack of, would leave her confused. Flair, who channels Maleficent before she gets in the ring, says, “Outside of work, I don’t feel like Charlotte Flair. I know on camera I have a very dominant persona. I would always be like ‘Why do men not approach me?’ My girlfriends would all have dates and I’m thinking ‘What? I don’t understand!’”

Arranged by destiny
Flair, 33, says it got to the point where she got cold and closed herself off to the idea of meeting new people. But then, destiny struck.

“People would tell me it would happen when I least expect it,” she says. “I met my guy on tour and well, he had to work very hard. I ended up falling in love with him. He understands the pressure and commitment to be gone weeks at a time — I think it would be hard to date someone outside the profession.”

And she speaks from experience. “I met someone and he asked me what I do for a living and I said I was a wrestler. And he said: ‘Oh the girl who holds up the sign’ and I’m like nope, not what I do.”

The ideal date
Flair, who has won numerous wrestling titles and was included in Sports Illustrated’s list of 50 fittest female athletes in 2017, considers herself a hopeless romantic. For her, there’s nothing better than to stay at home and eat.

“The ideal date is when we have a few days at home. He’s Mexican and will go to the Mexican grocery store and cook me a lovely Latin dinner,” she says. “My favourite is homemade quesadillas, tostadas and his homemade guacamole.”
