The town of Varanasi is long reputed as one of Indiafs most important pilgrimage sites, but dont think thats all it has to offer. The rich and vibrant history of Varanasi is evident in the quality of their artwork. The city is famous for beautiful silk sarees, intricate gold jewellery and hand-knotted carpets that showcase the skills of its artisans.

Silk is the most popular shopping item on the list for the travellers in Varanasi.

Tucked away down a tiny alleyway near the main train station, there are several silk factories that sell silk scarves from Rs 400 sarees from Rs 3000.

Tourists can also buy shirts, kurta pyjamas and head scarves, all made from the famous homespun khadi fabric.

Delicacies

After a long and tiring shopping trip take a local food tour to see what the city has to offer. Rabri Malai Balai is a popular dessert in Varanasi that includes milk, sugar, almonds, and pistachio nuts. You can find it served in small sweet shops.

Try the famous Benares Dum Aloo which is different from the dum aloo cooked elsewhere in India because the potatoes are stuffed with and cooked in a gravy that includes jaggery, fennel, and chilli paste.

Varanasi is also known for its street food and chaat vendors. Aloo chaat is very common.

The Varanasi Paan is famous across the world. There are two versions: One that includes tobacco, and one that includes only sweet flavours.
