The small cap category has been doing badly since last year. The category has lost money – the average returns is in the negative territory (-20 per cent) in the last one year. DSP Small Cap Fund is offering -24 per cent, marginally higher than its benchmark return of -27 per cent. Even in the three—year horizon, the fund has done a little better than the benchmark. However, it has underperformed the category by around 2 per cent points. Its record in the five- and 10-year horizons are better. Watch the scheme closely for a year before taking a final call. Finally, you know you are investing in a small cap scheme. Small cap schemes go through prolonged rough patches periodically. That is why mutual fund advisors recommend these schemes only to investors with aggressive risk appetite and very long investment horizon.
