Prime Minister Narendra Modi is contesting from Varanasi, the eastern Uttar Pradesh constituency he had won last time. He is seeking re-election on his BJP-led government's track-record on fight against cross-border terror, and on other measures like GST, demonetisation, Swachh Bharat mission. Modi was three-time chief minister of Gujarat - from October 2001 to May 2014 - before he moved to the Centre and became the NDA's PM candidate in 2014. Before he joined active politics, Modi was a full-time pracharak of the RSS from 1971 and took part in resistance against the Emergency. He was assigned to the BJP in 1985, thus starting a successful political career.
