Five ways to get the most out of mentorship
Mentorship can help sharpen perspective and allows better access to learning opportunities.
1. DECIDE EXPECTATIONS
It is a good idea to have structured expectations before becoming a mentee. “Expectations can be categorised as advice, constructive feedback and experience. There should also be a clear alignment of goals that you want to achieve,” said Sudhir Dhar, head of HR at Motilal Oswal Financial Services.
2. SHARE PLANS
A mentor can identify your potential basis his/ her experience and wisdom. “Use your mentor as a guide, support and a sounding board. The mentorship opportunity should be a platform to brainstorm your ideas” said Dhar. “It is imperative that you share all your professional/personal plans so that you and your mentor can identify long- and short-term plans.”
3. STAY FOCUSED
Given that time may not be in abundance, be honest about meeting your goals. “These can be grouped into frequent checks that allow your mentor to plan the next steps... Ensure focus towards the set objectives or risk derailing your growth prospects,” said Suman Reddy, MD at Pegasystems India.
4. GIVE FEEDBACK
Feedback is not one-way. “If you aren’t satisfied or want certain elements to be omitted from the learning process, keep your mentor in the loop,” said Reddy.
5. BE A GOOD MENTEE
A mentorship opportunity can only be fruitful when you own the entire process. “Be proactive and take complete accountability; carefully listen to your mentor’s suggestions and comments, and also offer different perspectives to things,” said Dhar.
