AYUSH ministry launches campaign to raise awareness about affordable practices for boosting immunity

  • The Ministry of AYUSH on Friday launched a three-month campaign aimed at increasing awareness about affordable and easy practices that can be adopted for enhancing immunity and preventing any disease.
  • The campaign, called "Ayush for Immunity", was launched through a webinar which saw participation of more than 50,000 people, the AYUSH ministry said.
  • A key-note address by spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar wherein he stated that Ayush solutions could lead the entire world to healthier and happier lives was the highlight of the event, it said.
  • The webinar was staged on Ayush Virtual Convention Centre (AVCC), the new digital communication platform of the ministry.

  • "Remember the press conference when I said the recovery rate was 9 per cent. Since then, there had not been a single day when the day's recovery rate was not better than the previous day's. Also, fatalities have also been decreasing with each passing day," he said.
  • Speaking on the increase in the number of tests, he added, "Yesterday, we tested over 8 lakh patients, which was huge compared to April when we tested 6,000 patients.   • Meanwhile, a total of 64,553 new coronavirus cases were reported on Friday morning in the country.
  • As many as 1,007 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said.

  • Altogether 224 inmates ofovercrowded district jail here have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last few days, sending the authorities into a tizzy.
  • According to Civil Surgeon, Araria, M P Singh, a total of 224 inmates have tested positive.
  • Reports of 182 had come out on Wednesday night, a day after 42 others were found infected.

  • Kerala is likely to witness a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases in the months of August and September with daily infections expected to touch between 10,000 to 20,000, State Health Minister K K Shailaja said.
  • "Experts have opined that during the months of August and September we may witness a surge in COVID-19 cases. We may report between 10,000 to 20,000 cases per day," she said in a video campaign urging the youth to join the "Covid Brigade" to halt the pandemic spread.
  • Noting that the death rate graph will start rising if the positive cases shoot up, the Minister said it should be stopped.

14 people succumb to COVID-19 in Australia

  • A Victorian man in his 20s has become the youngest person to succumb to COVID-19 in Australia, as 14 new coronavirus deaths were reported in the country, taking the national toll to 375, while the number of infections has gone up to 22,744.
  • Victoria, which saw just under 300 fresh cases for the first time in more than three weeks, recorded a jump in its new infections which touched 372 in the last 24 hours.
  • Confirming the daily deaths and new cases, State premier Daniel Andrews said, "it was fair to assume the man in his 20s was the youngest person who has died of COVID-19 in the country.''

  • Britain has no choice but to impose a 14-day quarantine on all travellers arriving from France due to rising coronavirus infection rates there, transport minister Grant Shapps said on Friday.
  • Britain announced late on Thursday that it would impose a quarantine, from 0300 GMT on Saturday, on arrivals from France, the Netherlands and Malta because infection rates there were too high, dealing a new blow to the travel industry.
  • France warned that it would reciprocate.

Mizoram reports 8 new cases

  • At least eight persons, including a 6-year-old girl, have tested positive for novel coronavirus in Mizoram, taking the northeastern state's tally to 657, an official said on Friday.
  • Of the eight new cases, five were reported from Aizawl district, two from Lunglei district and one from Kolasib district, he said.
  • The girl has contracted the virus from a COVID-19 patient in the state, the official said, adding that the other seven persons have returned from outside.

New low-cost test can diagnose COVID-19 in just 20 minutes

  • Scientists have developed a new low-cost nasal swab test which can accurately diagnose the presence of SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 in just 20 minutes.
  • The findings, published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology, show the test called N1-STOP-LAMP, is 100 per cent accurate in diagnosing samples containing SARS-CoV-2 at high loads.
  • The rapid molecular test is highly accurate and easy to use, making it a prime candidate for use in settings with limited testing capabilities, according to the researchers.

Nagaland pineapple farmers face tough times

  • The outbreak of COVID-19 and the measures taken to control its spread have affected all sectors of the economy. The disruption caused to the horticulture sector in Nagaland has negatively impacted the state's pineapple farmers.
  • According to Dr R Elithung Lotha, Joint Director & Mission Director (MIDH) at the Directorate of Horticulture in Nagaland, only 193 metric tons of pineapples were sold to Assam and 195 metric tons within the state till August 13.
  • Ali, a roadside pineapple vendor in Dimapur, said that there are few buyers within the town as people are hardly coming out of their homes.

  • The UK government has sealed two more deals to secure COVID-19 vaccines, buying shots in development from U.S. drugmakers Johnson & Johnson and Novavax Inc, the chair of the UK Vaccine Taskforce Katie Bingham told Sky News on Friday.
  • In a separate statement, Novavax said the UK would buy 60 million doses of its coronavirus vaccine candidate, NVX-CoV2373, for a phase 3 clinical trial in the country.

Vietnam health ministry to buy Russian COVID-19 vaccine

  • Vietnam's health ministry has registered to buy a Russian COVID-19 vaccine, state television reported on Wednesday, as the Southeast Asian country fights a new outbreak of the coronavirus following months of no local cases.
  • "In the meantime, Vietnam will still continue developing the country's own COVID-19 vaccine," state broadcaster Vietnam Television (VTV) said.
  • Vietnam has reported a total of 911 infections, with 21 deaths.
