PUNE: Wholesale onion prices increased to a record high at the benchmark Lasalgaon and Pimpalgaon markets in Maharashtra on Friday. The highest prices offered were Rs 79.50 per kg at Lasalgaon and Rs 82 per kg at Pimpalgaon, the highest ever for these markets.

The highest price of onion, normally fetched by only a few quintal onions, was Rs 82 per kg at Pimpalgaon Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), India’s largest onion market. The lowest price of the day for good quality onion was Rs 45 per kg while it was Rs 22 per kg for inferior quality, rain damaged onion.

At neighbouring Lasalgaon APMC, which sets the benchmark onion price, the highest rate was Rs 79.50 per kg while the lowest rate was Rs 23 per kg. Six-month old onion from storages has been receiving higher rates than the newly harvested kharif crop of red onions, which has been damaged by post-monsoon rainfall in Maharashtra.

Daily onion arrivals at both the markets have dipped to barely 5-10% of arrivals a year ago. Both the markets have been getting 900-1,000 quintals of onion daily, against 10,000-20,000 quintals a day last year.

“Onion arrivals are likely to remain low till December as the unseasonal rainfall has damaged the kharif crop and nurseries of early and late kharif crops,” said Dilip Bankar, chairman, Pimpalgaon APMC.
