Customs checks eased for US, S.Korean companies

A further relaxation of checking is likely soon to spare manufacturer-importers even as some logistics companies suspended picking up of consignments from China, Hong Kong and Macao, citing congestion at Indian ports due to clearance delays.

NEW DELHI: Indian customs authorities have exempted select US and South Korean companies from mandatory 100% physical checks of their shipments of Chinese-origin goods here, people privy to the development said. A further relaxation of checking is likely soon to spare manufacturer-importers even as some logistics companies suspended picking up of consignments from China, Hong Kong and Macao, citing
industry said the move was targeted at shipments originating in China. An official with the Chennai Customs Brokers Association said clearances had effectively come to a standstill at the port, which handles almost 70% of the shipments from China. The situation is similar at most key ports and airports in the country, another person familiar with the matter said.
