PM Modi to review FTAs this week; CEA to make presentation

The meeting assumes significance because China is suspected to route goods through other countries, taking advantage of the trade pacts.

Chief economic advisor Krishnamurthy Subramanian is likely to give a review of India’s free trade agreements to Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week, amid the country’s trade pacts coming under scanner due to the border standoff with China. “A virtual meeting is being planned on reviewing India’s FTAs. There will be a presentation to the prime minister,” an official
figure in discussions at the meeting. The issue is crucial as most of India’s exports to China have been of primary goods and raw materials, including petroleum products, organic chemicals, iron ore, cotton and plastic raw materials, while imports have been mainly intermediate and finished goods such as telecom instruments, electronic components, consumer electronics, active pharmaceutical ingredients and machinery.
