Making India USD 5 trillion economy challenging but achievable: Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired NITI Aayog's fifth governing council meeting at the Rashtrapati Bhavan today.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought the cooperation of states in helping India achieve the target of $5 trillion economy suggesting that each state should aim to increase their own economy by 2-2.5% and focus on exports. Recognising the distress in the farm sector, PM Modi has announced setting up a high-level task force to suggest structural reforms in agriculture.

“The goal to make India a $5 trillion economy by 2024 is challenging, but can surely be achieved,” PM Modi said, adding states should recognise their core competence, and work towards raising GDP targets right from the district level.

PM Modi was addressing the NITI Aayog's fifth governing council meet on Saturday. The meeting was attended by chief ministers of all states, except West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, and lieutenant governors of union territories besides top ministers of the Modi cabinet and the top officials of NITI Aayog.

“The key agenda of the meeting included rain-water harvesting, drought situation and relief measures, aspirational districts programme, transforming agriculture and security related issues with focus on left-wing extremists affected districts,” NITI Aayog vice chairman Rajiv Kumar said after the meeting which lasted for nearly seven hours.

Pointing out that the export sector is an important element in the progress of developing countries, PM Modi said both the centre and the states should work towards growth in exports, in order to raise per capita incomes.

“There is immense untapped export potential in several states, including the north eastern states. A thrust on export promotion at the state level will provide a boost to both income and employment,” PM Modi had said.

PM Modi said the need for proper implementation of schemes and decisions is vital as the country is moving towards a governance system characterized by performance, transparency and delivery.

According to the statement issued, PM Modi had said that the food processing sector should grow at a faster pace to benefit the farmers. He also called for effective steps to tackle the drought situation facing the country with the spirit of 'per drop more crop.'

PM said there is a need for a collective fight against poverty, unemployment, drought, flood, pollution, corruption and violence etc. "Everyone at this platform has a common goal of achieving a New India by 2022," he said.

Outlining his vision for empowerment and ease of living for each and every India, PM Modi stressed that the focus should be on collective responsibility for achieving short-term and long-term goals.

Describing water as an important element for life, PM Modi urged states to also integrate their efforts towards water conservation and management.

Outlining the need for achieve the targets set for the health sector by 2022, including target of eliminating TB by 2025, he urged those States who have not implemented PMJAY under Ayushman Bharat, so far, to come onboard this scheme at the earliest.

The governing council is the premier body tasked with evolving a shared vision of national development priorities, sectors and strategies with the active involvement of states in shaping the development narrative.

The council reviews the action taken on the agenda items of the previous meeting and deliberates upon the future developmental priorities.
