Sonia Gandhi skips Haryana poll rally
Owing to bad health, Congress president Sonia Gandhi missed her only election rally in Mahendragarh, Haryana ahead polls. While Rahul Gandhi filled in her place at the rally, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra skipped campaigning in the state all together .
Rahul Gandhi filled in for her mother at the rally, which was just his second in the state after he addressed one in Nuh earlier while his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra skipped campaigning in the state all together. He referred to his promise of Nyay minimum income support scheme in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls, saying if it had been implemented, economy would have got momentum, unemployment would have ended and farmers’ problems would have been addressed.
He also accused the BJP of dividing people into “Hindus and Muslims, Jats and non-Jats”
The Congress national leadership has been conspicuous by its near absence in Haryana, where it has completely shunned the northern region, where the party had won just one out of the 27 seats it bagged in the state in 2014, triggering speculation over whether the party has given up the fight.
Modi took a dig at the Congress at his rally in Hisar on Friday, saying Haryana had seen a video of how Congress leaders were counting seats outside Parliament and arguing about their dismal prospects in the state.
Congress candidates lost their deposits in 37 seats in the state in 2014 but the party did not make any special effort in these seats this time-.On the other hand, Modi added three rallies to his campaign schedule for the Jat belt of Haryana, making it a total of seven for the state, in what appears to be the BJP’s determined attempt to build a base in a region where it had fared badly in the 2014 elections.
