SISAI (GUMLA): The alliance between Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress seems to be on real test in Sisai assembly constituency (ST) from where BJP nominee is Jharkhand assembly speaker Dinesh Oraon.

The 57-year-old Oraon, who is seeking second consecutive term from this seat, is facing a tough challenge from JMM-Congress nominee Jigga Susaran Horo alias Jigga Munda. Sisai will go to the polls in the second phase of elections on December 7.

Located close to Chhattisgarh, Sisai was once regarded as bastion of Congress party’s leader the late Kartik Oraon family. Kartik was member of Lok Sabha from the Lohardaga seat. Kartik’s daughter and former minister Gitashree Oraon, who represented this seat in 2009, had bagged about 26,000 votes in 2014 assembly polls.

JMM had secured second position in 2014 assembly polls. BJP’s Dinesh Oraon had defeated JMM candidate Jigga by a small margin of votes. With the alliance between JMM and Congress, BJP is perhaps aware of a fresh challenge to stop the chances of a combination of Tribal-Christian-Muslim front against it, particularly the reserved seats.

In Sisai, the good news for the BJP is the entry of Congress party leader and former minister Gitashree Oraon’s husband and former IPS officer Arun Oraon into the party’s fold.

“Arun Oraon has now started spending good time in Sisai for campaigning in favour of BJP nominee Dinesh Oraon. I hope he would be able to swing the Congress party’s traditional votes to BJP in this seat,” Pramod Oraon, who is pahan (tribal priest), told ET at BJP’s election office in Sisai.

BJP workers are spending sleepless nights to mobilise voters, particularly tribals, in this constituency in favour of Dinesh Oraon. “Our local leaders like Tempbu Oraon (member of Zila Parishad), Sufal Oraon, Basant Oraon and Kiran Bara are trying their best to woo voters in favour of our candidate,” said local BJP leader Lakshmi Narayan Yadav.

BJP’s problem is the opposition parties’ allegations against the incumbent Raghubar Das government for attempts to bring changes to Chhota Nagpur Tenancy Act (CNT Act), meant for the protection of land owned by the tribal community.

“Opposition alliance is trying to mislead the tribal voters against BJP governmentover the CNT Act. So we are countering all such allegations at ground level,” another BJP leader, Nand Kishore Singh, said.
