Guwahati: Chief of Mizo National Front (MNF) Zoramthanga on Saturday was sworn in as the chief minister of Mizoram.

This is third time that rebel turned politician Zoramthanga took oath as the chief minister of Mizoram. Along with him 11 others ministers were also sworn in by Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan in Raj Bhavan.

MNF came back to power after 10 years defeating congress. In the assembly polls the MNF won 26 seats out of the total of 40 seats.

On Wednesday Governor invited the MNF chief to form government. The swearing in ceremony was attended by Meghalaya chief minister, Conrad Sangma and President of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Atul Bora.

MNF which emerged from Mizo National Famine Front (MNFF) a platform that protested against the inaction of Centre during the 1959 famine in Mizo areas of Assam. The front was led by Laldenga who staged uprising in 1966 and for several years carried out underground activities. Peace returned to Mizoram following inking of Mizo accord in 1986.

Zoramthanga was second in command in the MNFF. The outfit became a political outfit and rechristened itself as MNF.

MNF twice formed government; the first government was led by Laldenga (1986-88) and second by Zoramthanga (1998-2008). The party suffered massive defeat in 2008 and could win only three seats. Again in 2013 the party just won five seats and remained opposition in the state assembly.
