Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel took oath as the chief minister of Chhattisgarh. Governor Anandiben Patel administered the oath of office to Bhupesh Baghel at Balbir Singh Juneja Indoor Stadium in Raipur.

On Sunday, he was appointed as the new chief minister of Chhattisgarh, ending the suspense after days of intense deliberations. Congress central observer Mallikarjun Kharge made the announcement after the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting.

The Congress registered a resounding victory in Chhattisgarh, winning 68 seats as opposed to the BJP's 15. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders of the party attended the ceremony.

The win in Chhattisgarh is all the more special for Congress as it managed to rebuild itself after the 2013 maoist attack. The attack saw its top leadership including that of former state minister Mahendra Karma and Chhattisgarh Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel being wiped out.

Bhupesh Baghel is credited for rebuilding the party and infuse confidence and enthusiasm among workers. Bhupesh Baghel will be the third chief minister of the state.

Baghel belongs to the influential Kurmi (Other Backward Class) community, which accounts for around 14 per cent of the state population of around 2.5 crore.

Even when the party was going through a lean patch in the state, Baghel along along with then Leader of Opposition in the Assembly TS Singh Deo, continued to play a key role in mobilising and motivating Congress workers, who were disappointed after successive electoral debacles.
