Next 5 years as significant as 1942 to 1947: PM Modi

Modi said voters across the country voted to reinforce the government and its work, which was a totally positive voting.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the next five years would be significant for the country, “as was the period between 1942 and 1947”, to regain its rightful position globally.

India had held that position centuries ago, he told a huge public gathering outside the BJP office in Ahmedabad, adding: “I am sure India will regain its importance in the world order.”

On Sunday, after his second landslide win, Modi along with party chief Amit Shah returned to the place where it all began: the BJP office at Khanpur in Ahmedabad.

The headquarters of the Gujarat unit of the party that has been ruling the state for over two decades has now moved to the plush Kamalam complex on the outskirts of capital Gandhinagar. But the Khanpur office still retains the charm of the old party that once fought its way to the corridors of power in the state from being a motley group of dedicated workers. Modi and Shah too had started their political career from this office. Modi had chosen it to celebrate all his victories in assembly polls when he was the chief minister.

The celebrations were muted due to the fire tragedy in Surat that claimed 23 lives. The party avoided garlanding, fire crackers and other such paraphernalia.

Addressing his first public meeting outside Delhi after the victory, Modi started off in Gujarati, expressing his grief over the Surat tragedy. “On one hand there was this overwhelming sense of grief and on the other the call of duty,” Modi said, adding he could not start his journey without touching the soil of the land that made him. During the speech, he recollected the victory rally held at the same place after the 2012 assembly elections, the days spent in the office and his learnings therefrom.

The mandate for 2014 was mainly due to the message of development in Gujarat, Modi observed, and maintained the huge victory of 2019 that failed all pundits was a result of the good work taken forward by the government across the country.

Modi said voters across the country voted to reinforce the government and its work, which was a totally positive voting. “Assembly segment wise in Gujarat, BJP led in 173 assembly seats of 182 seats,” he noted.

“With win comes responsibility,” Modi said adding that the first responsibility was to digest victory.

Shah thanked voters of Gujarat for voting for the BJP in such a big way. “Gujarat was once known for riots and curfews,” Shah said. “After Narendrabhai took over as the CM of the state, riots vanished from Gujarat,” he said. Shah recounted the development works done by Modi when he was the CM in Gujarat. Modi, he said, buried Congress along with “gunda raj” and corruption in the sea.
