CHENNAI: While a wave of support helped Prime Minister Narendra Modi win a second consecutive term in office in the 2019 Lok Sabha poll, an opposing tide stalled the BJP at the borders of Tamil Nadu, enabling the DMK alliance to post a sweeping victory, actor Rajinikanth told presspersons in Chennai today.

“In Tamil Nadu, it was an anti-Modi wave. In politics, if a wave begins to sweep, those who stand against it cannot win. Politicians who rode the wave have won,” Rajinikanth told presspersons.

Rajinikanth, who had announced his political entry on December 31, 2017, is yet to formally take the plunge as a full-fledged politician.

The actor put Modi in the league occupied by “charismatic” former prime ministers such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi and state leaders such as CN Annadurai, M Karunanidhi, MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa, who have proven their popularity by singularly winning elections.

Rajinikanth also confirmed that he will be attending the swearing in ceremony of BJP leader Narendra Modi on May 30 in Delhi. Rajinikanth’s celluloid contemporary politician Kamal Haasan has also been extended an invite, though it is unclear as yet if Haasan would participate.

The DMK, which headed the Secular Progressive Alliance that included the Congress, communist parties, Vaiko’s MDMK and Dalit outfit VCK, had won 38 of the 39 Parliamentary seats that went to polls in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Polls to the Vellore seat was rescinded was the Election Commission and Income Tax officials seized cash at premises linked to DMK candidate Kathir Anand, son of the party’s Treasurer Durai Murugan.
