What the poor show means for AIADMK

    Synopsis

Even though the AIADMK fared badly, its decision to ally with smaller regional parties like the PMK has worked in securing the necessary seats in the bypolls to sustain his government.

    Agencies
The AIADMK had allotted its traditional strongholds in Southern Tamil Nadu for the BJP in the Parliamentary polls, drawing murmers of discontent among partymen.
The electorate’s endorsement of the NDA has proved Edappadi K Palaniswami to be an astute politician for siding with the BJP despite a perceived anti-sentiment towards the ruling party. Even though the AIADMK fared badly, its decision to ally with smaller regional parties like the PMK has worked in securing the necessary seats in the bypolls to sustain his government.

    Likely Relationship with Centre
Palaniswami is expected to strengthen ties with the Centre for the remainder of his tenure. The AIADMK had originally weighed all its 37 MPs in with the NDA during the no-confidence motion advanced by the TDP –– the first extension of support that was cemented later with an alliance in the state for the Lok Sabha polls.

The AIADMK had allotted its traditional strongholds in Southern Tamil Nadu for the BJP in the Parliamentary polls, drawing murmers of discontent among partymen. On key issues such as GST compensations running into thousands of crores, water sharing, and inflow of investments into the state, the AIADMK will reap the benefits of being a favoured partner of the NDA going forward.

    Expert Take
Palaniswami, for most of his time under as chief minister, had borne the demeanour of a cornered politician, facing internal factionalism and being ambivalent about his political affiliations. The poor show in the Parliamentary elections is bound to raise questions about his electioneering prowess. Although the external threat from Dhinakaran will fall flat after the polls, his image as a people’s politician will take a dent with the electoral drubbing. With the bypoll threat to his strength in the Assembly also decimated, Palaniswami has a clear road ahead till the next Assembly elections.

In the remaining period of its rule AIADMK should concentrate on areas which are visible to public .The smart city scheme has not extended foot paths for people to walk even short distance . Public toilets in all parks should be free and maintained by mobile team with water tanker . The people who have made residence of public toilets should be removed . Trees should be planted in all road edges to reduce the temp and pollution . Farmers should be allowed to come to city centers to sell their produce directly to the public. A pipe line project from Mettur Dam to Chennai to bring cauvery water will ensure next term for the party to rule Tamil Nadu .
