VARANASI: Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi held a roadshow on Wednesday evening in Varanasi, the constituency Prime Minister Narendra Modi represents in the outgoing House.

Gandhi’s 6 km-long roadshow passed through almost the same route of Modi’s roadshow on April 25. Priyanka’s roadshow was organised a day before the joint rally of the BSP-SP alliance in Varanasi which BSP chief Mayawati and SP national president Akhilesh Yadav will address.

Since Gandhi handles her party affairs in east UP in her capacity as AICC general secretary, her roadshow is supposed to send out a positive message among the Congress cadres of this region. Polling will be held in 13 constituencies, including Varanasi, in the seventh phase of elections on May 19.

Accompanied by Congress candidate Ajay Rai and Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel, Gandhi reached the BHU gates around 6.15 pm and garlanded the statue of Madan Mohan Malviya before beginning her roadshow. While the roadshow passed through different areas such as Lanka, Assi, Bhadaini, Shivala, Sonapura and Madanpura, Gandhi kept on waving at the crowds.

The Congress party’s local unit was engaged in pulling in crowds from the different areas of Varanasi. Later, Priyanka reached Kashi Vishwanath and Kal Bhairav temples to offer prayers.

Before the selection of Ajay Rai as the Congress candidate for the Varanasi seat, speculations were rife that Priyanka may be party’s nominee against PM Modi. Ajay Rai is a former MLA from Pindara assembly seat.

Earlier in the day, while addressing an election rally in support of Congress’ Salempur candidate Rajesh Mishra, Gandhi said: “Modi government is not ‘mazboot’ (strong) but a ‘magroor’ (arrogant) one. The mindset of the government is oppressive.
