  • Malaysia has reached a USD 3.9 billion settlement with American multinational investment bank, Goldman Sachs, over losses incurred from a multibillion-dollar scandal at the country's 1MDB investment fund.
  • As per Al Jazeera reports, the deal announced on Friday includes a USD 2.5 billion cash payout by the Wall Street giant to the Malaysian government and a guarantee to return at least USD 1.4 billion in assets linked to 1MDB bonds.

  • On the night of July 23, the State Government presented a paper to convene the session of the Assembly at very short notice. The paper was analysed and legal experts were consulted over it.
  • The date on which the Assembly session is to be convened is not mentioned in the Cabinet note and no approval has been given by the Cabinet for the same.
  • There is no justification provided for holding of the Session at short notice nor any agenda has been proposed for the same. 21-day notice is required for the session to be called according to normal procedures.
  • The State Government should ensure freedom and free movement of all the MLAs.

  • With the highest single-day spike of 49,310 cases, India's coronavirus count reached 12,87,945 on Friday, while 740 deaths reported from across the country made the cumulative toll cross the thirty thousand mark, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • The total COVID-19 cases include 4,40,135 active cases, and 8,17,209 cured and discharged or migrated patients.
  • With 740 deaths in the last 24 hours, the cumulative toll reached 30,601 today.

More than 1.5 crore COVID-19 samples tested so far: Health ministry

  • Close to 1.5 crore people have been tested for COVID-19 so far across the country, the Union Health Ministry said on Friday. It added that the testing has increased every day.
  • As per an official, a total of 3,52,801 samples were tested on July 23 across the country. Till date, 1,54,28,170 samples have been tested. Up till Friday, India was doing 11179.83 tests per million (TPM), which was a steady increase since the adoption of the 'Test Track and Treat' strategy.

  • Telecom companies lost 82.3 lakh subscribers during the COVID-19 lockdown period of April, data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Friday showed.
  • As per the reports received from 342 operators in April, TRAI said the number of broadband subscribers decreased from 68.7 crore at the end of March to 67.6 crore at the end of April with a monthly decline rate of 1.64 per cent.

Barnala police busted inter-state drug cartel operating in 11 states

  • In one of the biggest crackdowns on drug networking cartels, the Barnala Police busted an inter-state gang of illegal syndicates supplying psychotropic drugs in 11 states and more than 50 districts of India.
  • Some 27,62,137 intoxicating tablets, capsules, injections and syrups were seized along with the arrest of 20 persons.
  • According to a press note issued by SSP Barnala, drug money worth Rs 70,03,800, as well as five vehicles were also recovered.

50-60% jump in ceasefire violations by Pak in J-K in 2020: DGP

If I were there, I would have tried to stop him. I could have stopped the incident as I had the ability to stop Vikas, but I cannot say what was God's wish. What I can say is that Vikas was an anxiety patient and I was facilitating his treatment for the past three to four years, I have the reports. India's COVID-19 case fatality rate drops to 2.38%; recovery rate rises to 63.34%

  • For the third day in a row, the number of COVID-19 recoveries in a 24-hour span saw another record high, with 34,602 patients having recuperated pushing the recovery rate to 63.45 per cent, the Union health ministry said on Friday.
  • The case fatality rate has further declined to 2.38 per cent, it said.
  • According to data updated at 8 am, the total recoveries have climbed to 8,17,208, while there are 4,40,135 active cases of coronavirus in the country at present, the ministry said as the COVID-19 tally surged to 12.87 lakh.
