NEW DELHI: On a day when the Supreme Court declined to entertain a Delhi government plea over its power struggle with the Centre, the Aam Aadmi Party mounted a fresh attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled municipal corporations in the national capital.

Levelling serious charges of “financial corruption” and “misuse of funds” on the corporations, AAP MLA Nitin Tyagi demanded a financial audit into the workings of the corporations.

“Till today, no development work has happened in Delhi at the hands of MCD, however, over 400 existing projects are being renamed by it,” he claimed.

Speaking to reporters at the party office, Tyagi said the corporations were attempting to relay an image of themselves as capable and functioning.

"It inaugurates foundations, invites the public, distributes sweets, and publishes these images in the media. The truth, however, is that the public has not benefited from the funds given to the MCD for developmental purposes," said the Laxmi Nagar MLA.

He went on to allege that all these activities constituted “financial corruption” and not just “misuse of funds” but “abuse of funds”, too. Apart from seeking an audit, Tyagi also demanded a first information report (FIR) by the police.

“BJP’s top leadership and entire MCD should take cognisance and explain why funds are being misused and how it can benefit citizens,” he said.

These allegations were made a day after the BJP’s Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta, put out his “10 questions for Kejriwal”, including one pertaining to the advertising expenditure of the Delhi government.

He demanded that public money not be spent on politically motivated advertisements of the AAP government.
