HYDERABAD: Telangana government is weighing options to impose lockdown in Hyderabad amid a sharp spike in number of coronavirus positive cases over the last few days and close on heels of the Centre raising concerns over ‘high positives-low testing’ scenario.

At a high-level review held on the rising coronavirus spread in Telangana in general and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) region in particular, CM K Chandrasekhar Rao on Sunday indicated imposing lockdown in Hyderabad for 15 days.

Rao, while reviewing the strategy with the health and municipal administration ministers and top bureaucrats, cited the example of lockdown reimposed in Chennai to contain the virus and said he would convene the Cabinet meeting to decide on the fresh lockdown.

Chief Minister Rao held the high-level review meeting at his camp office Pragathi Bhavan on Sunday, ahead of the scheduled visit of the Central health ministry team that raised several red flags over ‘high positives-low testing’ in Telangana among others.

Centre raised concerns after Telangana reported India’s highest positive rate at 27.7% and the country’s lowest number of tests per million population at a mere 14,690 from June 10-23. Amid concerns that Hyderabad recorded India’s second highest positive rate at 32.1% on June 23, after Mumbai at 33%, the GHMC region on Saturday reported 888 Covid positive cases, the highest in a single day.

Ahead of the central team’s visit, the Telangana health ministry held the private labs responsible for the sudden spike in cases and high positivity, accusing them of contaminating samples that led to high positivity rate and disparity in numbers.

Citing the sharp spread of Covid-19 in large Indian cities in the recent days, CM Rao viewed the increased movement of public post-lockdown responsible for the spread of virus. “Fresh lockdown was imposed in Chennai to contain the virus spread and several other Indian cities were moving in similar direction,” said Rao, adding that the Telangana health ministry was proposing a 15-day lockdown in Hyderabad.

Pointing out that fresh lockdown in Hyderabad would be a significant decision, Rao said it needs preparing the public and government machinery, especially the police machinery. “Let us examine the situation keenly for two to three days. If need be, Cabinet will be convened in three to four days to discuss proposals for the lockdown, alternatives and other related issues and a decision will be taken,” said the chief minister.

Updating the chief minister on the measures taken to strengthen the healthcare infrastructure to offer treatment to the needy, Health Minister Etela Rajender said his ministry recommends to reimpose a 15-day lockdown in the GHMC region.

Why Telangana govt is not accepting its incompetence? Blaming private labs will not cut ice and using it as an excuse to hide its failure.

Lockdown will not help at all. What is required at this moment is "self discipline and sincerity". People of Telangana never prefer to wear Helmet and prefer to drive on wrong side pretty confidently is an example of their sense of irresponsible behavior. Government imposing anything is problem for them. Post lockdown, people were partying and visiting relatives. Imposing lockdown can confine them for 15 days but then again they will party around. IMPOSING HEAVY FINE "MIGHT" BRING SOME SENSE. BUT NOT SURE.
