NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party MP Azam Khan was made to apologise twice in the Lok Sabha on Monday for the sexist remarks he had made last week against BJP MP Rama Devi, who was then presiding over the House proceedings.

Amid calls for exemplary action against him, Khan said, “"I have no disrespect towards the Chair. Everyone in the House knows my speech and my conduct, but despite this, if the Chair feels that I made a mistake then I apologise for that.” Then some members, including Rama Devi said his apology was not qualified. After some protests, Speaker Om Birla asked Khan to apologise properly. “I had said before also that she is like my sister. Whether I say it once or thousand times, it will remain the same. It is not possible for me to have any hurtful sentiments for the Chair. I apologise again,” said Khan.

The Speaker then closed the matter saying the House belongs to all and they should uphold its dignity. Meanwhile, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav brought up the Unnao rape survivor’s car accident . “See what happened with our daughter from Unnao...BJP people say Jai Shri Ram, they don't say Sita Ram." Some members backed him. Outside the Parliament, AICC general secretary in-charge of UP Priyanka Gandhi termed the accident “shocking” while wondering whether there was any scope for justice under the Yogi Adityanath regime. “The road accident involving the Unnao rape victim is shocking. Where has the CBI probe in this case reached? Why is the accused MLA still in the BJP? Why is there laxity in the security of the victim and the witnesses? Can you hope for any justice from the BJP government without an answer to these questions,” she tweeted.
