Congress' take on CAA in Assam

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president, Ripun Bora on Sunday said, “Any foreigner who got citizenship post March 24, 1971 irrespective of their religious affiliation will be made stateless, if congress comes to power in Assam in 2021 assembly polls.”

Guwahati: Opposition Congress in Assam said that it will make those who got Citizenship post March 1971 as stateless if the party comes to power in Assam.

Assam is witnessing bitter protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) since last month.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president, Ripun Bora on Sunday said, “Any foreigner who got citizenship post March 24, 1971 irrespective of their religious affiliation will be made stateless, if congress comes to power in Assam in 2021 assembly polls.”

Talking to ET, he said, “For those who will get Citizenship under the CAA, we will ask the Centre to take away those people, no government facility will be provided to this people.”

Bora said, “We are clear this is a violation of Assam Accord which stipulates foreigners who entered the state after the cut-off date of March 24, 1971, irrespective of their religious affiliation has to be deported. CAA is a violation of Assam Accord and we cannot accept the same.”

Assam Accord was signed after six yearlong anti foreigners’ movement in 1985.

BJP is repeatedly accusing that it allowed infiltration from Bangladesh and the party is shouldering the burden of Congress mistakes.

Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently said that with prime minister Narendra modi taking reign of power in 2014 there is no atrocities on minorities in Bangladesh.

Sarma said that CAA will not bring any new people from Bangladesh but trying to settle those who were brought to Assam by Congress in the past.

Meanwhile BJP leaders in Assam which is battling anti CAA protest has found innovative ways to deal with black flags shown to them.

It is a common in last one month to show black flag to BJP leaders in different areas of Assam.

On Sunday President of the Assam unit of BJP, Ranjit Kumar Dass retaliated black flag shown to him with Assamese Gamocha (towel), revered as a one of symbol of Assamese culture.
